Empowering Dreams: My Unforgettable Journey as Miss ARC Broward 2015

Since 2013, ARC Broward has hosted the annual Miss ARC Broward pageant, a heartwarming celebration of individuals with disabilities aged 6-17, showcasing their unique skills and passions through a personality showcase and evening wear segment. This uplifting event is just one example of Arc Broward's commitment to empowering individuals with disabilities and other life challenges to reach their full potential. With a rich legacy spanning over six decades since its inception in 1956, Arc Broward has been dedicated to providing vital opportunities and support, fostering inclusivity, dignity, and independence for all individuals they serve. Operating without paid solicitations, the organization ensures that 100% of every contribution directly benefits their mission and programs, further solidifying their steadfast commitment to making a lasting impact in the community and helping individuals realize their full potential.

The Miss ARC Broward pageant is a vibrant celebration of diverse talents, with participants showcasing an impressive range of skills on stage. From the elegance of dance and gymnastics to the charisma of singing, public speaking, and the creativity of artwork display, each performance is a testament to the unique abilities of the contestants. I had the privilege of being part of this incredible event from its inception, participating in the first-ever Miss ARC Broward pageant in 2013. With my trusty baton in hand, I combined cheerleading and dance techniques to deliver a high-energy routine, complete with cartwheels, back walkovers, and acrobatic tricks. Although I didn't take home the crown that year, I returned in 2014 with even more passion and creativity, determined to showcase my growth and talent. And then, the moment of triumph arrived – I was crowned Miss ARC Broward 2015! This title remains deeply special to me, symbolizing the empowerment, confidence, and joy that this experience brought into my life.

The Miss ARC Broward pageant commences with a dynamic opening number, featuring a unified showcase of dance and energy from all contestants, setting the tone for an unforgettable evening. The personality segment is a kaleidoscope of individuality, where each contestant showcases their unique style and talent through customized outfits and captivating performances. This vibrant display of diversity features an array of skills, including dance, cheerleading, gymnastics, heartfelt public speaking, and creative artwork displays, celebrating the distinct strengths of each participant. I was thrilled to showcase my passion for baton twirling, demonstrating precise techniques, intricate routines, and flair, highlighting my dedication to this unique talent.

The evening wear and interview segment was a captivating highlight of the event, where contestants shone in their formal attire and shared their heartfelt thoughts and aspirations during a poignant interview. This moment showcased not only their elegance but also their confidence, charm, and inner beauty, leaving a lasting impression on the audience. As they shared their personal aspirations, favorite things, and what they wanted the judges to know about them, I was asked to share my biggest wish, making for an unforgettable moment. Initially, I had said that my biggest wish was for people with disabilities to be treated equally, but I've since realized that "equitably" better captures my vision. Now, I wish for people with disabilities to be treated equitably, acknowledging the need to address unique challenges and needs for true inclusivity. When asked about winning Miss Arc Broward, I replied that it would mean disproving misconceptions about autism, shattering stereotypes, and showcasing the capabilities and strengths of individuals on the autism spectrum. This segment was a stunning display of the contestants' beauty, both inside and out, and I was honored to be a part of it.

As the moment of truth arrived, the excitement was palpable. Each contestant was presented with a trophy, a testament to their unique talents and spirit. But there could only be one Miss ARC Broward, and anticipation was building. The winner would receive not only a crown but also a sash, symbols of their reign as Miss ARC Broward for the year, to be worn with pride at ARC events. My heart was racing as the announcer prepared to reveal the next Miss ARC Broward. And then, I heard my name - "Bailey Bender" - called out as the winner of Miss ARC Broward 2015! I made my way to the stage, beaming with joy, where Miss Florida from Miss USA graciously placed the sash and crown upon me, marking the beginning of an unforgettable journey.

As the reigning Miss ARC Broward 2015, I had the privilege of attending a range of events throughout the year, proudly wearing my crown and sash. One of the highlights was Delish, a spectacular culinary event that brought together top chefs from Broward County and Miami Dade to compete and create exquisite dishes. The electric atmosphere was filled with music and the aroma of delicious food from the ARC Broward culinary school, where students were actively involved. I enjoyed sampling the culinary masterpieces, taking a complimentary photo with the photo booth team, and being stopped frequently for pictures, feeling like a true celebrity. Additionally, I had the heartwarming opportunity to attend the ARC Broward preschool and school of hire graduation, witnessing the achievements of the students. I was also generously donated tickets to attend an American Idol concert, making my reign as Miss ARC Broward 2015 an unforgettable experience that combined culinary delights, community engagement, and exciting entertainment.

Beyond my involvement in ARC Broward events, I also had the pleasure of participating in pageant events alongside the contestants, creating unforgettable memories and fostering a sense of community. I attended an ice cream social, where we discussed the upcoming pageant and bonded over sweet treats, and a charming tea party, where I wore an elegant black dress and fancy hat, announced raffle ticket numbers, and connected with the contestants in a warm and refined setting. I even enjoyed a spa day with the contestants, indulging in nail pampering and relaxation. As the reigning Miss ARC Broward, I attended subsequent pageants, and eventually, my reign came to a close as a new winner was crowned. Through these experiences, I formed lasting connections with the contestants and supported them on their journey, making my time as Miss ARC Broward truly unforgettable.

I continue to be an active part of the Miss ARC Broward community, attending the annual Pageants and nurturing friendships with fellow titleholders. I've maintained connections with several former Miss ARC Broward’s and even some Little Miss ARC Broward’s, a division established for girls aged 6-11 after my reign. One notable connection is with a Miss ARC Broward winner who was my 3rd-grade classmate. I also recently met another past titleholder at an art show and was surprised when the reigning Miss ARC Broward and her mother recognized me from the pageant, where we competed together when she was just 8. Furthermore, I had a chance encounter with the current Little Miss ARC Broward and her mom while running errands, and we struck up a conversation about hockey. These unexpected reunions serve as heartwarming reminders of the lasting bonds and memories forged through the Miss ARC Broward experience.

The Miss ARC Broward pageant is a shining example of Arc Broward's dedication to empowering individuals with disabilities and celebrating their unique talents and strengths. Through my journey as a participant and titleholder, I experienced firsthand the transformative power of this event, which fosters inclusivity, confidence, and joy. As I continue to be involved in the Miss ARC Broward community, I am reminded of the lasting impact of this experience and the unforgettable connections formed along the way. Arc Broward's commitment to providing vital opportunities and support has made a profound difference in the lives of countless individuals, and I am honored to be a part of this legacy.

Crowned as Miss ARC Broward 2015! An unforgettable moment of pride and joy. Feeling honored and grateful for this incredible journey.
